チチ (孫 チチ) / Chi-Chi (Son Chi-Chi)

Name meaning: Milk (literally breasts and father)

From: DragonBall

Chi-Chi is first introduced in the early chapters of the DragonBall manga.  She is a human girl, the daughter of the Ox King and an unknown mother.  In her first appearance she is being chased by a viscous dinosaur, but uses the blade on her helmet to decapitate it and a laser to destroy the body.  While she is not helpless, she doesn’t appear to like violence, showing fear until a pivotal moment where she unleashes large fighting potential.  This trait is later shown in her son, Gohan, where he blanks out in dangerous situations, letting his innate Saiya defences protect him, then being unaware of his ability.

Chi-Chi is one of the few characters in DragonBall that is pure enough to ride Goku’s Nimbus Cloud unaided.  In contrast to Krillin, Bulma and Master Roshi, who need to hold onto Goku, shrink themselves or simply cannot set foot on the vehicle, Chi-Chi happily sits with Goku, showing her pure nature.

When Chi-Chi first meets Goku, she, as a pre-pubescent girl, becomes obsessed with the idea of marrying him.  She even thought that then-villlain Yamcha was boyfriend material when they first met, simply because he was handsome and falsely confessed his love for her to cover his initial physical attack against her.  Being the daughter of the Ox King gave her a fearsome reputation that Goku was unaware of, which heightened her feelings for him.  When Goku “pat-pat”ted her genitals to confirm whether she was a male or not, she thought he was hitting on her.  She made Goku promise to marry her and he agreed, thinking “marriage” was a type of food.

Chi-Chi later reveals in DragonBall Z that her and Goku’s first date had ended in a sparring match.  Chi-Chi, having forced Goku to take her out, had flirted with him, asking him what he would like to do.  Goku suggested a fight, since it was his favourite thing to do and while she was initially surprised, Chi-Chi found herself enjoying it a lot, proving to be a good match for him.  Chi-Chi remarked that it was a great first date, though it is unsure if she and Goku continued sparring throughout their marriage.

Goku and Chi-Chi meet again during the Red Ribbon Army’s reign of terrorChi-Chi and her father hastily prepare a wedding when they are informed by a psychic that Goku is returning to their village.  Colonel Silver attacks the village and Goku and Chi-Chi team up to stop their advance, with Chi-Chi defeating a number of soldiers single-handedly.  When Goku goes to leave, Chi-Chi asks him about their wedding and Goku assures her that he will “try it next time” (still thinking marriage is a food).

At the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, Chi-Chi enters the competition and stops by Goku to greet him.  When Goku doesn’t recognize her, she becomes mad and insults him.  She later tells him that if he beats her in the final that she will reveal her identity to him, although Oolong and Master Roshi have already realised who she is.  Goku beats her with the air pressure force of one punch and is surprised to discover her identity.

Asked again about the wedding, Goku states that he has no idea what marriage is, but keeps his promise and proposes to her in front of the attending crowd.  Chi-Chi tells Goku that she loves him and kisses him on the cheek.  She also apologizes to Yamcha for his long-forgotten and unrequited love confession and says she hopes he finds someone soon (which irritates Bulma).

Goku and Chi-Chi’s wedding is the natural conclusion of the DragonBall series, with Chi-Chi donning her mother’s wedding dress for the occasion.  The anime continues the story somewhat, with the newlyweds embarking on short adventures before the DragonBall anime came to a conclusion.  During the several years that the manga and anime did not cover, Chi-Chi gave birth to her first son, Gohan Jr, who was named for Goku’s adoptive grandfather.

Chi-Chi becomes a protective mother of her son, possibly because of her own mother’s early death and her wish for childhood normalcy that she never had for herself.  Young Gohan studies rigorously and is forbidden from fighting and training with his father, although he keeps the tail he was born with.  Unbeknownst to Goku or Chi-Chi, the Saiya’s tail causes them to become Giant Apes when looking at the full moon, but Goku states that they “go to bed early” and thus have never seen a full moon.

When Gohan is kidnapped by Goku’s brother Raditz, Chi-Chi believes that her husband is staying out late on purpose and rushes over to Kame House with her father in tow.  The pair are horrified to learn of Goku’s death and Gohan’s kidnapping by his rival Piccolo, although Chi-Chi appears to accept this rather well and does not rescue her son.  A year later, when Prince Vegeta and Nappa arrive on earth, she arms herself with a multitude of weapons intending to fight alongside her resurrected husband and allies.  She harboured some resentment towards Goku for allowing Gohan to fight Vegeta, although it had been Piccolo’s plan, and ignored him when they arrived at the post-battle scene.  Despite her anger, she did in fact care for Goku at Wukong Hospital while allowing Gohan to travel to the Namekian homeworld with Krillin and Bulma.  She attempted to follow them later on but was thwarted by dilapidated space travel machinery.

Chi-Chi continues to encourage Gohan in his academic studies, even going so far as to hire him a private tutor.  This ends abruptly when the instructor insults her husband and she beats him with her bare hands.  She grudgingly accepts Piccolo into her home when he stays with Goku and Gohan to train and patiently deals with being injured on a regular basis while her husband and son get used to their Super Saiya forms.  She reluctantly allows Gohan to train for the battle with Cell, but forces Goku and Piccolo to get their driver’s licences so they can contribute to the household.

Chi-Chi nurses Goku when he falls ill with his heart virus and is widowed when he is killed during the battle with Cell.  She later gives birth to Goku’s second son whom she calls Goten.  In contrast to her upbringing of Gohan, she trains Goten on a regular basis, although she doesn’t allow him to become a Super Saiyan.  Gohan is surprised at Goten’s abilities when he finally begins training his brother in secret with future wife, Videl.

Chi-Chi has an ongoing friendship with Bulma and later Android #18 and Videl.  Her friendship with Bulma often extends to rivalry similar to the pair’s husbands, with them bickering over who has the strongest son.  These rivalries are all in fun, as the pair will fiercely defend the other from verbal of physical attack.

Chi-Chi is briefly reunited with Goku at the World Martial Arts Tournament, however, when the evil Majin Buu is released, she is evacuated to the assumed safety of Kami’s Lookout along with other friends of the “Z-fighters”.  When the Lookout is breached by Buu, she boldly slaps him in the face and lectures him on his behaviour.  Chi-Chi is turned into an egg and stepped on in front of Goten.

Chi-Chi, along with other kindhearted people of the earth, is revived and supplies energy to Goku’s final Spirit Bomb that finally destroys Buu.  In DragonBall GT, she is shown to have frustration at Goku’s constant childlike mind, remarking that life with her husband is “much of the same” even when he is transformed into his child state by an ageing Emperor Pilaf.

She retains some authority over her two strong sons, slapping Goten for insolence when he is possessed by Baby, although she does not realise that he is not himself.  She goes into battle with Syn Shenron, deciding that she has nothing to lose.

Chi-Chi was one of a few characters to survive the Androids assault on the planet in Future Trunks’ timeline.  She is shown to have aged heavily in comparison to her regular self, likely due to the stress of losing her husband and her only son constantly battling the Androids.

Chi-Chi is voiced by Mayumi Sho and Naoko Watanabe at various points in the series and in gaming media.

Her name is revealed to be a pun on “milk” in the Japanese DragonBall FOREVER book.  The word “chichi” in Japanese can also mean breasts or even refer to the word for “father”.

The armour that Chi-Chi wears resembles the clothing Pola wears in Pola & Roid.

Her hair was intended to be blue, but was made black in the anime.

As an adult, all the clothing Chi-Chi wears is based on Chinese dresses or martial arts uniforms.

Her favourite food is the Chinese chimaki, a type of rice ball.  Her favourite occupation is farming and she particularly likes tractors.

Master Roshi attempts to perve on Lunch, with dangerous consequences…

Lunch / ランチ

From: DragonBall

Lunch is one of Goku’s companions.  Goku and Krilllin rescued her from pursuing policemen.  Unbeknownst to both the boys and Lunch herself, she has a bad tempered alternate personality who often commits crimes for the fun of it.  She resembles Police Officer Polly Buckets from Dr. Slump - who is a trigger happy policewoman.

When she has blue hair, Lunch is sweet-natured, quiet and caring but this is not to say her other personality is heartless.  Even Lunch’s Blonde form becomes quite close to Goku and Krillin, even becoming upset when Krillin is killed at the World Martial Arts Tournament.

Lunch’s two personalities alternate whenever she sneezes.  It’s unknown whether she was born with this ability or developed it at some point.  In the early days of English DragonBall fandom, her Blonde form was nicknamed “Kusami”, the Japanese expression for a sneeze.  Neither form remembers the other’s actions but it appears that Blonde Lunch’s character is slowly bought under control.

For a time Lunch lives with Master Roshi and Turtle at Kame House and is completely unaware of his constant perversions against her.  Blonde Lunch however, is more switched on and will not hesitate to resort to gunfire to those who irritate her.

Blonde Lunch was originally a felon in Brown Country, an area of earth that resembles a town from the Old West.  Blonde Lunch is their most wanted criminal, with a bounty of $2 000 000 Zeni, the currency of the series.  After coming to live with Goku, Krillin and Master Roshi, Lunch spends eight months cooking and cleaning leading up to the World Martial Arts Tournament.  Even after the Tournament, she remains living with them, her Blonde form making a deal with Master Roshi that she will not shoot him as long as he does what she says.

She later proves to be a worthy adversary for even the Red Ribbon Army as she beats a soldier that invades their island.  Later, she joins them at the next World Martial Arts Tournament where she meets Tien Shinhan.  Although she dislikes him to begin with, she becomes attracted to him.  Their relationship is largely one-sided, with Tien Shinhan finding her Blonde form annoying, although he does still try and protect her.  After his death she drowns her sorrows in a bar.

Although she doesn’t appear often during the later parts of the manga and most of the DragonBall Z anime, she’s implied to have kept following Tien Shinhan and is seen at the end of the series giving her energy to Goku’s final Spirit Bomb against Buu.

She doesn’t appear much in DragonBall GT, but her outfit changes slightly, she appears aged and is present at the closing scenes of the show.

Lunch’s lack of appearance in later parts of the manga is due to Toriyama forgetting that she existed.  While he did reintroduce her in a brief comedic strip printed during the battle with Frieza, he later said that she didn’t make a full return due to possible confusion between her and the Super Saiyan forms of several other characters.

While Lunch’s outfit changes often, her red ribbon, fingerless gloves and tank top are staples of nearly all her outfits.

Although Lunch ages during the DragonBall series, her appearance during the 2008 anime Yo! Son Goku and his friends return!! she looks closer to her earlier appearances and looks like she aged backwards.  For this anime’s promotional poster, she is shown in her Blonde form, but it doesn’t appear in the actual show.

Lunch shares appearance characteristics with Ayla from Chrono Trigger - another character Toriyama designed.  She also looks similar to the Traffic Agent Lady from the 1988 Public Service film, Goku’s Traffic Safety.  This character is also voiced by the same voice actress.

Lunch is voiced by Mami Koyama and in several dubs, Lunch’s two forms have different voice actresses.

In the Harmony Gold dub, she is called Marilynn.

Oolong / ウーロン

From: DragonBall

Oolong is a shape-shifting humanoid pig who meets Goku and Bulma during their first quest to find the Dragon Balls.  He is based loosely on the character Zhu Bajie/Zhu Wuneng aka “Pigsy” from Journey to the West.  He was prototyped in Toriyama’s earlier manga Dragon Boy, in the character Binyao - a shape-shifter with a bad attitude.  This type of character was also seen in the Donbe from Dr. Slump.

He was born in Octagon Village - a village filled with other humanoid pigs who shared his perverted desire to steal panties and other things.  He attended Shapeshifting Academy with Pu’ar, whom he bullied relentlessly.  He was later expelled for stealing the teacher’s panties which is why he can’t hold a form for more than 5 minutes.

While a major character throughout the early DragonBall stories, Oolong is relegated to a sideline character by the arrival of Goku’s Saiyan brother, Raditz.  This is mostly due to his strength not being able to match new threats to earth and he takes a back seat to the new main characters.

Oolong first met Goku in Aru Village - which he terrorised for money and girls that would become his brides.  Using his shape-shifting abilities he extorted cash from the villagers and kidnapped their young girls.  Because of the large form he took, the villagers never thought to fight back.  When Goku was set up to take the place of a bride he fought Oolong and won quickly.

Oolong led the villagers to his mansion where it was discovered that the girls had been pampered with expensive clothes, jewellery, food and more.  While Oolong had given off a terrifying aura to the villagers, in private he was easily pushed around and the girls had used him to get nice things for themselves.

Joining Bulma and Goku (albeit regretfully), Oolong travelled with them but made numerous escape attempts.  Each time he did, he would get lured back by Bulma tying her panties to a fishing line or using her Pee Pee Candy to stop him running away.  She uses Oolong’s transformation ability to bargain with Master Roshi to put the fire on Fire Mountain/Fry Pan Mountain.

While Oolong is usually cowardly he does have moments of bravery.  He intervenes during Emperor Pilaf’s wish to Shenron and stops the world from being taken over.  He has good deduction skills, identifying Chi-Chi as Goku’s mysterious opponent at the World Martial Arts Tournament.  When her identity is revealed and everyone is shocked, he remarks “I told you so!”.  He is also the first to think that Goku might not be human - which is revealed when Raditz arrives on earth.

Oolong is often depicted wearing a Chinese Communist uniform.  It’s thought that the design was a subtle message from Toriyama, and his character is also a parody of Mao Tse-Tung (aka Chairman Mao) as a literal “Communist Pig”.  With Oolong’s materialistic existence (surrounded by wealth and women) matching that of many Communist leaders this is likely intentional but Toriyama has never made an official statement on the fact.  It’s possible his outfit is based purely on the semi-Chinese setting DragonBall started in.

Oolong appears in two of the three live action DragonBall movies.  In the Korean film Fight Son Goku, Win Son Goku he is portrayed by an actor in a costume resembling his manga counterpart.  In DragonBall: The Magic Begins he is portrayed by a human and called “Piggy”.

Oolong’s name, like Pu’ar and Yamcha, comes from Oolong Tea.

In DragonBall GT, the character Zoonama lives in a very similar manner to early Oolong.  Zoonama terrorises villagers by threatening to make earthquakes if they don’t give him brides.  In this instance, Trunks plays what was Goku’s role in the original series - dressing up as a woman to infiltrate his scheme.

When Oolong transforms into a handsome man in Aru Village, he resembles Senbei Norimaki making his “serious face” (which Senbei can only hold for 3 minutes).

Dub names given to Oolong include MaoMao, Oscar, Pudgy and Goret.

He is voiced by Naoki Tatsuta, who is known for many other roles in anime and video games.  Tatsuta voiced Nurikabe in GeGeGe no Kitaro, Dr. Yuuri Kelllerman in Cowboy BeBop, Robita in Astro Boy and Sokolov in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.  He also voiced Porky Pig in various Japanese dubs of Loony Tunes.

プーアル / Pu’ar

From: DragonBall

Pu’ar is Yamcha’s shape-shifting companion.  He attended the Southern Transformation Kindergarten along with Oolong, who bullied him relentlessly.  Some years later, Pu’ar met Yamcha and the pair spent approximately 2 1/2 years in the desert at bandits, robbing anyone who crossed their path.  When Pu’ar and Yamcha met Bulma, Goku and Oolong, they followed them with intent to steal the DragonBalls but later become friends.

Pu’ar is a much more talented shape-shifter than Oolong.  While Pu’ar can change into a variety of shapes and hold the forms for as long as he wants, Oolong is limited to holding a transformation for only 5 minutes.  Despite his superior skills, Pu’ar is also unable to transform into consumable objects like fuel and food.

When Yamcha is stalking Goku to steal the DragonBalls, his skills come in handy when Pu’ar takes Goku’s tries to lure Bulma and Oolong out of their van.  Later, Pu’ar assumes the form of a pair of scissors that cuts off Goku’s tail when he accidentally transforms into a giant ape.

Pu’ar’s role in the series is mainly limited to defensive assistance and medical aid.  He transports Yamcha to hospital after his leg is broken at the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament.  He also is seen using his transformation abilities to hinder or defeat weaker enemies.

Mr Popo owns a cat that looks similar to Pu’ar.  It appears in DragonBall episode 127.

Pu’ar is one of the few characters that survives the Androids’ attack on earth in Future Trunks’ timeline.  He is seen living in a submarine with Oolong, Master Roshi and Turtle.

In the 1990 Korean film adaption of DragonBall, Pu’ar was played by a plush toy and later, in DragonBall: The Magic Begins, a Chinese film, he is portrayed by a parrot called Miss Knowwhat, but still accompanies Yamcha (called Westwood in this adaption).

There is lots of debate regarding Pu’ar’s gender.  While he is voiced almost exclusively by females, Toriyama said that when drawing DragonBall, he imagined Pu’ar to be male.

A prototype to Pu’ar can be found in the Dragon Boy manga.  The character Binyao is a cat-like shapeshifter, but is closer to Oolong in personality, as he tries to trick the Princess into giving up her food.

Pu’ar is named for Pu-erh tea.  His companion, Yamcha’s name, literally means “To eat and drink tea”.

Pu’ar has a number of unusual names across various dubs, including Squeaker, Pool and Plume.

Pu’ar is voiced by Naoko Watanabe, who also voices Chi-Chi.  Watanabe also voiced Guu in Hare+Guu and Miyu in Vampire Princess Miyu.

The first Kamehameha Wave (manga version) to be featured in DragonBall.

This technique was pioneered by Master Roshi, taking a whopping fifty years to master.  Goku, however, manages to pull of a smaller-scale version of the attack within minutes of seeing it performed, shocking everyone around him.

武天老師の教え (むてん ろぅし の おしえ)/ Muten Roshi no Oshie

An image song for Master Roshi, this song featured in episode 130 of DragonBall during a training montage.  It serves to discuss Roshi’s lifestyle and background as well as highlight the tasks someone would need to accomplish in order to receive training from him (ie, “I am the rumoured Kame Sen’nin/The one and only Muten Roshi!”, “bring me a girl’s panties”).  While I find it a bit too camp to listen to in public, I do enjoy it for comedy value.
