Lunch / ランチ
From: DragonBall
Lunch is one of Goku’s companions. Goku and Krilllin rescued her from pursuing policemen. Unbeknownst to both the boys and Lunch herself, she has a bad tempered alternate personality who often commits crimes for the fun of it. She resembles Police Officer Polly Buckets from Dr. Slump - who is a trigger happy policewoman.
When she has blue hair, Lunch is sweet-natured, quiet and caring but this is not to say her other personality is heartless. Even Lunch’s Blonde form becomes quite close to Goku and Krillin, even becoming upset when Krillin is killed at the World Martial Arts Tournament.
Lunch’s two personalities alternate whenever she sneezes. It’s unknown whether she was born with this ability or developed it at some point. In the early days of English DragonBall fandom, her Blonde form was nicknamed “Kusami”, the Japanese expression for a sneeze. Neither form remembers the other’s actions but it appears that Blonde Lunch’s character is slowly bought under control.
For a time Lunch lives with Master Roshi and Turtle at Kame House and is completely unaware of his constant perversions against her. Blonde Lunch however, is more switched on and will not hesitate to resort to gunfire to those who irritate her.
Blonde Lunch was originally a felon in Brown Country, an area of earth that resembles a town from the Old West. Blonde Lunch is their most wanted criminal, with a bounty of $2 000 000 Zeni, the currency of the series. After coming to live with Goku, Krillin and Master Roshi, Lunch spends eight months cooking and cleaning leading up to the World Martial Arts Tournament. Even after the Tournament, she remains living with them, her Blonde form making a deal with Master Roshi that she will not shoot him as long as he does what she says.
She later proves to be a worthy adversary for even the Red Ribbon Army as she beats a soldier that invades their island. Later, she joins them at the next World Martial Arts Tournament where she meets Tien Shinhan. Although she dislikes him to begin with, she becomes attracted to him. Their relationship is largely one-sided, with Tien Shinhan finding her Blonde form annoying, although he does still try and protect her. After his death she drowns her sorrows in a bar.
Although she doesn’t appear often during the later parts of the manga and most of the DragonBall Z anime, she’s implied to have kept following Tien Shinhan and is seen at the end of the series giving her energy to Goku’s final Spirit Bomb against Buu.
She doesn’t appear much in DragonBall GT, but her outfit changes slightly, she appears aged and is present at the closing scenes of the show.
Lunch’s lack of appearance in later parts of the manga is due to Toriyama forgetting that she existed. While he did reintroduce her in a brief comedic strip printed during the battle with Frieza, he later said that she didn’t make a full return due to possible confusion between her and the Super Saiyan forms of several other characters.
While Lunch’s outfit changes often, her red ribbon, fingerless gloves and tank top are staples of nearly all her outfits.
Although Lunch ages during the DragonBall series, her appearance during the 2008 anime Yo! Son Goku and his friends return!! she looks closer to her earlier appearances and looks like she aged backwards. For this anime’s promotional poster, she is shown in her Blonde form, but it doesn’t appear in the actual show.
Lunch shares appearance characteristics with Ayla from Chrono Trigger - another character Toriyama designed. She also looks similar to the Traffic Agent Lady from the 1988 Public Service film, Goku’s Traffic Safety. This character is also voiced by the same voice actress.
Lunch is voiced by Mami Koyama and in several dubs, Lunch’s two forms have different voice actresses.
In the Harmony Gold dub, she is called Marilynn.

The first Kamehameha Wave (manga version) to be featured in DragonBall.
This technique was pioneered by Master Roshi, taking a whopping fifty years to master. Goku, however, manages to pull of a smaller-scale version of the attack within minutes of seeing it performed, shocking everyone around him.
武天老師の教え (むてん ろぅし の おしえ)/ Muten Roshi no Oshie
An image song for Master Roshi, this song featured in episode 130 of DragonBall during a training montage. It serves to discuss Roshi’s lifestyle and background as well as highlight the tasks someone would need to accomplish in order to receive training from him (ie, “I am the rumoured Kame Sen’nin/The one and only Muten Roshi!”, “bring me a girl’s panties”). While I find it a bit too camp to listen to in public, I do enjoy it for comedy value.

Some of my favourite Master Roshi moments.
There are almost too many favourite Roshi moments to pick…what are your favourites?
The Kamehameha Wave, performed by Roshi (its creator) and Goku (who pulled it off after seeing it only once!).
Roshi used the Wave to put out a fire, after Bulma promised to spend some “alone time” with him. After he put out the fire (unfortunately destroying the Ox King and Chi-Chi’s home in the process), she forces Oolong to shapeshift into her lookalike and go in her place. Unfortunately for her, Oolong decides to extract his revenge by flirting with Roshi and letting him “puff puff” her chest.
